What to Wear for Spring Family Photos in Naperville — Tips from a Local Photographer

One of the questions I get most often from families before their session is: "What should we wear?" It's one of the most stressful parts of the whole experience — and it genuinely doesn't need to be. After 15 years photographing families across Naperville and the Chicago suburbs, I've seen what works, what doesn't, and how to make the whole process feel easy. Here's everything you need to know.

Start with one person, build from there

The easiest way to coordinate outfits without everything looking too "matchy-matchy" is to start with one person — usually mom or whichever family member has the most specific outfit in mind — and build everyone else around that. Pull 2–3 colors from that first outfit and use those as your palette for the rest of the family. You don't need to match; you just need to coordinate.

Spring color palettes that photograph beautifully

Spring in Naperville means soft greens, creams, blush pinks, warm whites, dusty blues, and light terracotta. These tones work beautifully against the fresh greenery and blooms you'll find at spots like the Riverwalk or Knoch Knolls. Avoid neon or very bright colors — they can distract from your faces and don't age as well in photos you'll be printing for your walls.

Earthy neutrals — sage, ivory, taupe, soft rust — are always a safe and timeless choice. They photograph warmly under natural light and pair beautifully with the natural backdrops we use for outdoor sessions near Naperville.

Layers are your best friend in spring

Illinois spring weather is famously unpredictable — it can be 65° and sunny at 10am and 50° with a breeze by noon. Layers also add visual interest to your photos. A light denim jacket, a cozy cardigan, or a linen overshirt can all be removed mid-session if it warms up, and they add texture and dimension when they're on. I love when families bring a few options so we can mix it up throughout the session.

What to avoid

A few things that tend to create challenges in photos:

Large logos or graphics. Text and brand logos pull the eye away from faces and expressions — the whole point of the photo. Plain or subtly textured fabrics always photograph better.

Everyone in white or everyone in black. A family all in white can wash out in bright spring light. All black can feel heavy. One or two people in a neutral is great; the whole family can be overwhelming.

Clothes that don't feel like you. If you're not a "flowy dress" person, don't wear one for your session just because it photographs well. The most beautiful family photos happen when everyone feels comfortable and like themselves. Wear what makes you feel good.

What about the kids?

Dress kids in something comfortable that they can move in — especially little ones. If your toddler is in an itchy dress or stiff shoes, you're going to spend half the session managing a meltdown instead of enjoying it. Soft fabrics, elastic waistbands, and shoes they can run in make a huge difference. For babies and newborns, simple and soft is always best — let their sweet faces be the star.

A note on shoes

Shoes matter more than most people think, especially for outdoor sessions on trails or grass. Skip the brand-new shoes that haven't been broken in. For locations like Knoch Knolls or Springbrook Prairie, comfortable walking shoes or even clean white sneakers look great and keep everyone happy. For the Riverwalk, you can get away with something a little dressier.

When in doubt, ask me

Once you book your session, I send every client a detailed style guide with specific outfit suggestions, color palettes, and real examples from past sessions. And I'm always happy to look at photos of your outfit options before the session and give you my honest thoughts. Getting this right is part of my job — and I genuinely love helping families feel confident and excited before they show up.
