The Best Outdoor Locations for Spring Family Photos Near Naperville, IL

Spring is one of the most beautiful — and most popular — times of year to book a family session in the Naperville area. The flowers are blooming, the light is soft, and everyone is ready to get outside after a long Illinois winter. As a Naperville family photographer who has been shooting on location for over 15 years, I've spent a lot of time exploring the best spots this area has to offer. Here are my favorites.

1. Naperville Riverwalk

The Riverwalk is one of the most versatile and beloved spots in Naperville for a reason. Covered bridges, brick paths, the DuPage River, and gorgeous flowering trees in spring make it endlessly photogenic. It works beautifully for families with young kids because there's so much to explore — little ones stay naturally engaged, which means more candid, relaxed moments for your gallery. Go early in the morning on a weekday for the best light and the fewest crowds.

2. Knoch Knolls Nature Center

Tucked along the DuPage River on the south side of Naperville, Knoch Knolls is one of my personal favorites for family sessions. You get wooded trails, scenic bridges, open meadows, and a beautiful natural backdrop that feels a million miles from the suburbs. Spring brings wildflowers and fresh green growth that makes the photos feel lush and alive. It's also wonderfully low-key — your family can wander and play while I follow the light.

3. Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve

If you love open skies and wide-open space, Springbrook Prairie is stunning in spring. The trails wind through native prairie grasses and wildflowers, and the expansive sky creates a backdrop you simply can't replicate anywhere else. This is the spot I reach for when a family wants something a little different — fewer trees, more sky, more breathing room. Golden hour here is absolutely breathtaking.

4. Riverview Farmstead Preserve

Located in south Naperville, Riverview Farmstead has a peaceful, countryside feel that photographs beautifully. Historic buildings, open fields, and a relaxed rural atmosphere give your session a timeless quality. Families who want something a little more rustic and intimate — rather than the classic park backdrop — love this location. It's also less visited than the Riverwalk, which means we usually have the space to ourselves.

5. Downtown Plainfield

For families who want something with a little more character and urban charm, downtown Plainfield is a wonderful option. Historic storefronts, brick streets, and the charming small-town feel give your photos a completely different look — warm, fun, and a little editorial. It pairs especially well with a casual, playful session style and works beautifully for families with older kids or teens who might feel a little awkward in a traditional park setting.

6. Your own backyard or home

This one surprises people, but it's true — some of my favorite spring sessions have happened right in a family's own backyard. A porch with good light, a blooming tree, kids running through the grass — there's a magic to photos taken in a place that genuinely belongs to your family. As a photographer who specializes in on-location and in-home sessions, I can help you see the beauty in your own space that you might not notice when you live there every day.

How to choose the right location for your family

The best location is the one that fits your family — not the one that photographs the most beautifully in theory. When we connect before your session, we'll talk through your kids' ages, your family's energy, and what kind of images you're hoping for. From there I'll make a recommendation based on what I know will work best for your specific group and the time of year.

Spring sessions in Naperville book quickly — especially April through early June when the blooms are at their peak. If you're hoping to get on the calendar this season, now is the time to reach out.
