Hi everyone! I'm continuing my blog series of featuring people and businesses in our surrounding area of Naperville, Plainfield and Aurora. If you missed my last one about Justin Coop and functional medicine, click here!
Today's feature is about a fun and down-to-Earth mom of three girls with a very unique art form offering.
Meet Jennifer Lagerwall, owner of Silk Avenue Scarves in Plainfield, IL.
Jennifer has an in-home studio where customers can create their own unique silk scarf using the Turkish art form of marbling called Ebru.
Jennifer is a stay-at-home mom who used to work in physical therapy clinics. She came across this Turkish marbling art form (Ebru) about 8 years ago while taking a class on it. She decided that with her daughters gearing up for college, she wanted to generate an income while still tending to her girls. She started her business about 3.5 years ago traveling all over for parties and events. With having so much equipment and tools to go along with making a marbled scarf, Jennifer decided to turn her basement into her own personal studio about a year and a half ago and has been having so much fun with it! Its super cute and cozy atmosphere really helps get your creative mind going and she's great at explaining how to do each step. First you have to add a thickening agent to the water which is in a long, rectangular basin.
Next, you take any of the many hues of acrylic paint and start dropping the colors onto the water. You can add as may or as few as you'd like.
From here you can either use a rake with pre-measured lines to create symmetric lines and patterns or you can free-hand and swirl and pull as you'd like.
Once you're happy with the design, you take a fresh silk scarf and with another person, pull it tight and carefully lower it onto the paint.
After you've made sure the ends and corners have paint, you carefully lift the scarf and rinse in a bucket of cool water and hang it up to drip dry. And that's that!
This is such a great idea for a birthday party or getting your girlfriends together! There is space for bringing in your own appetizers and treats and it's BYOB so you can really get creative with your group. The suggested age is about 7 and up. Mornings and during the day are best but call or email Jennifer to schedule your time to get creative! She will also travel to you for groups of 20 or more. Any type of private event such as corporate, bridal shower, baby shower, birthdays, etc.
If you'd rather just purchase scarves individually from Jennifer, visit her site for pre-made scarves. Visit her Etsy site here!
Thank you so much for taking the time to show me your unique art form, Jennifer! It was so much fun and you're a wonderful teacher and hostess! I look forward to having a girls' night together with you soon!
